By: Sean Crose Emanuel Navarrete highlighted an ESPN card in Phoenix Saturday night when he faced Oscar Valdez for the second time. At stake was the WBO junior lightweight title. Defending titlist Navarrete won the first battle with Valdez, but Valdez had obvious plans for things to work out differently in Saturday’s scheduled 12 rounder. The first round was relatively close – until Navarrete put Valdez to the mat with a series of blows. With that being said, Valdez was able to get back to his feet and survive the round. Still, it was a less than stellar beginning for…
NASSAU, Bahamas — Justin Thomas was long off the tee and made a few long putts on the back nine to overtake Scottie Scheffler with a 6-under 66 and build a one-shot lead Saturday over golf’s best player going into the final round of the Hero World Challenge.Thomas is trying out a 46-inch driver – a little more than an inch longer than normal – that he previously used for practice at home to gain speed and length. He blasted a 361-yard drive to 8 feet on the par-4 seventh hole and led the field in driving distance. But it was…
Witnessing Nikola Jokic stack up triple-doubles in his career is slowly becoming a tradition now in the NBA, as he recently recorded his 139th in a 126-114 loss to the Cavaliers this past Thursday night. The star big man has now moved to third place in the all-time historic list. His climbing of this prestigious ladder means that he’s now moved passed none other than Magic Johnson, one of the greatest players who ever graced the basketball court. The European giant ended last night’s game with 27 points, 20 rebounds and 11 assists. Even though Jokic could’ve scored even more…
Dana White on Chris Weidman, Anthony Smith, and Clay Guida after UFC 310: ‘They should all retire tonight’
Dana White has seen enough to know that Chris Weidman, Anthony Smith, and Clay Guida should all call it a career. All three veterans suffered losses on Saturday night at UFC 310, and while Smith his latest performance was “probably” his final fight, neither Weidman or Guida addressed that possibility during the event. While he’s never directly forced anyone into retirement, White said he would ideally hear all three fighters make that call after two of them fell by knockout and the third suffered a first-round submission during the final UFC pay-per-view in 2024. “They all retire tonight,” White said…
Adam Peaty Talks Paris 2024, Connecting With Michael Phelps And Being Inspired By McEvoy & The 50 Free Veterans In the months after missing out on his third straight Olympic 100m breaststroke title by 0.02 in Paris, Adam Peaty has connected with Michael Phelps and drawn inspiration from Cam McEvoy. The world record-holder appeared on the brink of becoming only the second man to win the same event at three straight Games only for Nicolo Martinenghi to come through with Peaty and Nic Fink sharing silver. The Briton would later test positive for Covid although he’s quick to say that Martinenghi is…
Maybe everybody thinks they were born at exactly the right time, but personally I can make a pretty good case. I can say I remember the 60s (maybe a couple days?), I saw Apocalypse Now! in theaters, and a bunch of other stuff, but all of that is debatable. What is not is that people my age have the healthiest understanding of modern technology, especially the internet. We can remember clearly what life was like before it. [Funny story, I used to play basketball in my friend’s driveway while, I found out much later, his dad was helping to invent…
Fall Report Mike Rooney – December 7, 2024 From 2002 to 2013, San Diego qualified for eight of a possible 12 NCAA tournaments. That is a remarkable record for a program from nearly any conference let alone the WCC. And that leads us to Hawaii head coach Rich Hill. Hill is the godfather of this program. And he set USD up for success even upon leaving for the islands. When Hill took over in 1999, the Toreros had been a Division I program for just 20 seasons. And none of those had ended with a postseason appearance. That changed very quickly,…
Ellis Genge on giving back to Bristol amid the ‘frightening’ statistic over the city’s disadvantaged youth – as England star dons a hard hat to launch his foundation £11million community project
A muddy building site next to a retail park on a grey, wet Thursday is not the place you’d expect to find one of English rugby’s most high-profile players. But Ellis Genge is certainly no ordinary sportsman and his club, Bristol Bears, undoubtedly like to do things differently.‘If you walk 400 metres back that way, you’ll see my childhood house,’ said Genge, gesturing over his shoulder after swapping the white England shirt he wore in front of 80,000 people at Twickenham last month for a new look of hard hat and high-vis jacket.‘Mental, isn’t it? It is a bit emotional…
RYAN GARCIA and Luke Campbell kicked 2021 off with a brilliant fight. I was sad with the outcome as Luke is a friend of mine and former Olympic teammate, as well as a great lad. Even though Ryan Garcia did a top job and dominated most of the fight, is he the real deal? He has 8 million followers on Instagram, is friends with celebrities, always in the public eye. There is so much hype around this lad. But can Garcia truly fight? Has he got the right attitude to go all the way? Has he been fought any top…
Over hundred years of golfing history is set to come to end at North Oxford Golf Club next year after it was announced that the club is to close in order to make way for a major housing development. The club, which was founded in 1907, is located just three miles from Oxford city centre, and has been selected to be part of a development of 1,180 homes to help meet the city’s housing shortage. The club’s 450 members were informed that the club will close a few weeks ago. Ian Middleton, who represents Kidlington South on the district council,…
