Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Mission Viejo Nadadores’ Kaelia Hughes will swim for Arizona State University beginning this fall. Hughes, although originally from Illinois, moved to California following the 2021 season and swam for Irvine Novaquatics before settling at MVN.
I’m incredibly excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Arizona State University. I want to thank my family, friends, coaches, and everyone at MVN for supporting me endlessly through this process. Counting down the days until i’m a Sun Devil! Forks up 🔱😈
Hughes is rather versatile, as she swims the breaststrokes/IMs as well as the mid-distance freestyle events. She recently competed at the Speedo Sectionals – Carlsbad, where she finaled in the 100/200 breast and 400 IM. She took 10th in the 100 breast (1:13.28) and 7th in the 200 breast (2:41.10), before placing 9th in the 400 IM (5:05.48) with a PB.
At the 2023 edition of the same meet, Hughes had an exceptional meet to take 13th in the 200 free (1:49.77), 21st in the 200 IM (2:02.36), and 6th in the 100 breast (1:03.35). While the 200 free and 200 IM were PBs, her 100 breast was just off the PB she established in prelims (1:02.56).
Best times SCY:
- 100 breast – 1:02.56
- 200 breast – 2:17.07
- 100 free – 51.62
- 200 free – 1:49.77
- 500 free – 4:55.38
- 400 IM – 4:25.62
ASU, formerly a member of the PAC-12, will join the BIG-12 this fall. At the latest and final PAC-12 championships, the Sun devils finished 5th out of 8 teams. To final at the BIG-12 Championships in 2024, it took times of 1:03.68/2:17.62 in the 100/200 breast, 1:50.78/4:58.87 in the 200/500 free, and a 4:26.69, leaving Hughes with several options for her championship meet event line up.
Other members of ASU’s class of 2028 include Kaitlyn McMorrow (fly/free), Ariel Beltran (IM), Haiden Schoessel (sprint free), Payden Rafferty (back), and Jordan Greber (free/IM).
