The showdown we were all awaiting did not disappoint.
Brown senior Jack Kelly annihilated the Ivy League, Ivy meet, Brown program, and Brown pool records, and he hit the NCAA “A” standard, in front of a sold-out home crowd in Providence.
Kelly went out quickly with a high stroke count to move ahead of the field by half a body at the 50, clocking a front-half split of 23.44. Kelly kept up his rhythm over the second 50, while Penn senior Matthew Fallon, a legendary back halfer, gave chase, moving from 7th to 2nd over the second 50 yards. But Kelly was too far ahead for Fallon to catch. Fallon, the American record holder in the 200 meter breast, split 24.5/27.0, passing his teammate Watson Nguyen to earn the silver medal with 51.56.
Kelly came home in 27.1 to notch a personal best time of 50.60, which is the third-fastest time in the country so far this season. Only Julian Smith of Florida and Nate Germonprez of Texas have been faster.
