Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu is a doubt for the Six Nations after being injured training with Glasgow Warriors.
The centre suffered an upper body injury earlier this week and was rested for Glasgow’s 24-7 loss to Harlequins in the Champions Cup last night.
Glasgow boss Franco Smith said: ‘He had an assessment this morning. I don’t know the extent of it yet – I know that the feedback around the player will be given tonight and tomorrow, As we have been involved down here, I haven’t heard the final assessment yet.
‘I think he might have injured his pec. It was a freakish injury. It was just something that happened. We weren’t suspicious about it, we just wanted to make sure it was nothing serious. But we will have more clarity tomorrow.’
On the potential impact of losing Tuipulotu for any period of time, Smith added: ‘It is not just the player but as a person as well in our environment.
‘He brings a lot of confidence to people around him. I am sure it will be a loss for everyone if that is the case, but I can still hope there is enough of the season left that he can still contribute. So we hope it is not serious.’
Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend now faces an anxious wait to see if he will be able to call on his talisman for the tournament opener against Italy on February 1.
Scotland skipper Sione Tuipulotu is an injury doubt ahead of the Six Nations
Tuipulotu has been in sparkling form for club and country this season, scoring four tries, and is expected to be named in the British and Irish Lions squad to tour Australia next summer.
There was further cause for concern in the Scotland camp when lock Scott Cummings was withdrawn in the first 15 minutes of Glasgow’s 24-7 defeat at Harlequins.
He suffered an arm injury and Warriors boss Smith added: ‘[Scott Cummings] will have to be assessed. Hopefully it’s not too serious.’
