WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — It wasn’t quite a storybook ending. West Virginia’s players didn’t get to hoist retiring coach Randy Mazey onto their shoulders and celebrate a trip to the College World Series for the first time in program history. But Mazey’s last ride was nonetheless a magical one, and when it ended with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to North Carolina in the Chapel Hill Super Regional — oh-so-close to the Omaha promised land — the Mountaineers celebrated their outgoing coach and celebrated each other, in between tears and bittersweet smiles.
