Becca Mann Publishes Memoir ‘Outside the Lanes’ That Details Mental Health Struggles, Triumphs
When Becca Mann first burst onto the national swimming scene, she was labeled a prodigy.
The youngest swimmer to place in the top 10 at four events at the U.S. Olympic Trials, things were looking great.
But Mann missed a spot on the Olympic Team and things began to spiral.
“Outside the Lanes: A Pro Swimmer’s Story of Resilience, Reinvention, and Redefining Success” is a memoir by Mann, scheduled for release on April 8, 2025, by Blue Star Press.
In the book, she details the anguish and triumph of her swimming career, as well as the mental and emotional challenges she faced throughout her life, including dealing with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Mann’s work chronicles her daily battle with OCD, starting with admitting there was an issue, then figuring out what it was, and finally what could be done to help her deal with OCD.
This book is a fantastic resource for any swimmer, or non-swimmer, dealing with mental health issues. It speaks of what Mann was often thinking and how that differed from what she said or what her actions were.
Anyone facing this battle will benefit just from reading Mann’s inner dialogue in big moments.
The book, too, is a light and quick read, showing incredible balance.
The memoir culminates in her historic achievement as the first and only person to complete the grueling 21-hour, 40-mile Maui Nui Tri-Channel Crossing, swimming between the Hawaiian islands of Maui, Molokai and Lanai.
Beyond recounting her athletic feats, Mann delves into themes of resilience, personal growth, and redefining success beyond conventional expectations.
This is a must-read for young swimmers especially, but is very enjoyable for any swim fan, or anyone battling mental health issues.
