The Irving Zoning Commission narrowly approved a zoning change that could allow the Dallas Mavericks to build a casino resort and arena near the former Texas Stadium site. The commission voted 5-4 to approve two proposals that will make the plans of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation a reality.
The Adelson-Dumont family purchased the Mavericks from Mark Cuban late in 2023 with the development of a casino resort and arena in mind.
But Mavericks CEO Rick Welts said last week that the franchise intends to stay in Dallas and wants to build its own arena.
“What we’re saying to the city is we want to exhaust every possible option in the city of Dallas before considering pivoting to another location in the Metroplex,” Welts told the Dallas Morning News.
The Mavericks’ lease at American Airlines Center ends in July 2031.
