It was a blend of a repeat champion and a brand new champion at the Virginia Class 6 state meet on March 5.
The Yorktown girls team once again reigned, winning their third title in a row and fourth in five years.
On the boys side, Chantilly made history by winning its first ever state championship. The school opened in 1973.
Class 6 features the largest schools in terms of enrollment in Virginia.
GIRLS’ RECAP
Yorktown won just two events, but its depth was enough to overcome a stiff challenge from Battlefield, which finished 36 points behind in second.
Yorktown junior Sophie Fredericks won the 100 butterfly in a personal-best time of 54.32, and then swam second on the school’s 200 free relay team which won in a time of 1:35.76.
Mary Hecmanczuk, Nora Sherman and McKenzie Cory were other team members.
The individual standouts were Battlefield junior and Virginia commit Alyssa Sagle, and Fairfax sophomore Sadie Buckley.
Sagle won the 100 freestyle in a personal-best time of 49.92, and then won the 100 back in a time of 52.19.
She also was a part of winning teams in the 200 medley and 400 free relays.
Sagle swam leadoff for the 200 medley relay team which won in a time of 1:44.32. Emma Young, Abby Hubert and Sophie Hayden were other team members.
Young also won the 50 free in a time of 23.82.
In the 400 free relay, Sagle swam anchor for a team which won in 3:31.10. Maddie Richardson, Amelia Edwards and Maddie Mercer were the other team members.
Buckley won the 200 individual medley in a time of 1:58.74 and the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:49.11.
Other individual winners were:
- Cosby junior and Virginia Tech commit Ally Vernon won the 200 free in a time of 1:48.54, which was a personal best by 1.04. She finished second and won the 100 free at last year’s state meet.
- James Madison junior Marleigh daSilva won the diving event with 471.40 points, defending her title from last year.
- Robinson Secondary junior and Wisconsin commit Lilla Wilbur won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:01.62. She improved on a third-place finish at last year’s state meet (1:02.52).

BOYS’ RECAP
Chantilly was led by junior Kyle Li, who won the 100 breaststroke in a personal-best time of 54.93 and was a part of the winning teams in the 200 freestyle relay.
Li swam leadoff for the 200 free relay team which won in a time of 1:22.54. Ben Clabeaux, Ben Farello, and Yaron Li were also a part of the team.
Chantilly also won the 400 freestyle relay behind the team of Blake Madsen, Clabeaux, Farello, and Yaron Li, which won in a time of 3:03.34.
The 200 medley relay was won by Langley’s team of Michael Zhou, Parris Garvin, Hunter Zipperer and Max Thompson, which clocked a time of 1:31.17.
The individual standouts were Colgan junior Alex Grocholski and Lake Braddock senior Josh Howat.
A Virginia Tech commit, Grocholski won the 200 individual medley in a personal-best time of 1:48.33 and the 500 free in a time of 4:26.43.
A Virginia signee, Howat won the 50 free in a time of 19.97 and the 100 free in a time of 43.75.
Other individual winners were:
- Lake Braddock senior Josh Donovan won the 200 free in a personal-best time of 1:37.38, improving his previous best time by .91.
- WT Woodson Nathanial Grannis won the diving event with 578.25 points, repeating as champion. He also finished second two years ago as a sophomore.
- Colonial Forge senior Derek Dykman won the 100 butterfly in a personal-best time of 48.68. His previous best time was 50.84.
- Centrevillle senior Mike Soh captured the 100 backstroke in a personal-best time of 49.23, improving on his previous best time by .15. He finished second at last year’s meet.
