Big 12 Championships, Night 3: Ilya Kharun goes 44.13 to Win 100 Fly
The first two nights of Arizona State’s tenure at the Big 12 Championships went swimmingly. Night 3 is headed in that direction.
Ilya Kharun started the night for the Sun Devils by going 44.13 to win the men’s 100 butterfly. That’s off his in-season time of 43.85, and it allows the conference (43.75) and meet (44.06) records set in 2017 by Joseph Schooling to stand. He did it by denying one of the few viable repeat bids from last year, edging reigning champion Jordan Tiffany of BYU.
Kharun’s swim does no favors to the slew of teams in Arizona State’s wake at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

TCU’s David Ekdahl finished Wednesday night by rallying to the win on 3-meter. He starts Thursday with a score of 383.10 that just edges Elias Petersen of Utah for the springboard sweep. Ekdahl had been fourth in prelims.
Petersen was on the podium again, the Utah junior scoring 382.85. That duo unlatched from the field early. Ekdahl’s teammate Elliott Dillon was third in 330.90, nudging Cincinnati’s Will Claus by 1.4 points.
Prelims leader Gage Dubois, second on 3-meter, slipped to sixth for Arizona. Dubois had been third at Pac-12s last year and sixth at NCAAs in this event.

Women’s 100 butterfly
Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Arizona State won a race. Julia Ullmann, uncharacteristically isolated as the only Sun Devil in the A final, took care of business in 51.40 seconds, .01 off her top seed from prelims. That was seven tenths up on Cincinnati’s Joleigh Crye, the breaststroker who went 52.13.
TCU’s Jeanne Dahmen finished third in 52.85, ahead of Adelaide Meuter of Houston.

Ilya Kharun didn’t match his in-season speed, going 44.13. But he did win the race by eight tenths over teammate Filip Senc-Samardzic, allowing three Sun Devils to finish in the top four. Tommy Palmer was third in 45.00. In between was another conference newcomers, Haakon Naughton of Arizona third in 44.94.
That demotes Jordan Tiffany to fifth. He went 45.52. That’s 1.01 slower than what he used to win the title in 2024.

The women’s 400 IM – subtle foreshadowing – came down to two Arizona State swimmers on the final leg. Sonia Vaishnani came back in 27.81, enough to hold off Charli Bown and deny her the IM double by .05 seconds. Vaishnani went 4:10.28. She had secured the top seed out of prelims. Brown won the 200 IM with Vaishnani third Wednesday night.
Libby Michel of Cincinnati was third in 4:13.75. BYU took fourth and fifth, led by Lucy Warnick. ASU added seventh and eight place.

The men’s 400 IM – foreshadowing pays off – came down to three Arizona State swimmers on the final leg. Daniel Matheson outsplit Michael Hochwalt on the final 50 by .22 seconds, but Hochwalt’s feverish, high-stroke-rate final 25 gave him the win over his teammate, the freshman touching in 3:41.40.
