Michel Arkhangelskiy Wins Three as Florida State Upsets Florida
Michel Arkhangelskiy won three individual races as Florida State notched a one-point upset of Florida and a sweep of the Sunshine State rivalry.
The 21st-ranked Florida State men’s team scored a 150-149 win over the No. 4 ranked Gators. Aided by two relay DQs from the fifth-ranked Gators, the Florida State women scored a 161-138 victory in the meet swum at Florida Aquatics Swimming & Training in Ocala.
Arkhangelskiy, a freshman, wrapped up his day by going 46.21 in the 100 butterfly to beat Josh Liendo (46.42) and lead three Seminoles in the top four. Magnus Christensen (3:50.68) and Calvin Wise followed with a 1-2 in the 400 individual medley, which meant just a second-place finish in the concluding 200 free relay was enough to guide FSU to the victory.
Arkhangelskiy won the 50 freestyle in 19.65, with teammate Sam Bork second. He went 42.51 to win the 100 free. Arkhangelskiy swam butterfly on the winning 200 medley relay, teaming with Mason Herbet, Tommaso Baravelli and Jokubas Keblys.
Andrew Rich did the backstroke double for Florida State, with Herbet second in the 100. Logan Robinson claimed the 200 fly and was third in the 100 fly. Yordan Yanchev was quickest in the 500 free.
Florida swept the diving events, with Peyton Donald scoring 392.78 points on 1-meter and Jesus Gonzalez claiming 3-meter with a score of 355.73.
The Gators started strong with a 1-2-3 in the mile, led by Luke Corey. Liendo followed by winning the 200 free in 1:35.29 with Paul Dardis second. But it fell part from there.
Raphael Rached Windmuller swept the breaststroke events. Liendo, Julian Smith, Alex Painter and Ed Fullum-Huot edged out the win in the 200 free relay at 1:18.69.
On the women’s side, Florida State sealed the win with a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 fly. Edith Jernstedt led the way with a time of 52.50, compounding her win in the 200 fly. Jenny Halden and Sophie Freeman followed. Freeman was also third in the 200 fly.
Halden helped the Seminoles get off on the right foot by winning the 200 medley relay. She teamed with Alice Velden, Maddy Huggins and Gloria Muzito. Velden claimed the 100 back in 53.17. Huggins won the 100 breast in 1:00.79 with teammate Julia Mansson second, and the duo replicated that finish in the 200 breast. Muzito’s time of 22.81 won the 50 free with teammate Maryn McDade second, and they were second and third, respectively, in the 100 free. McDade, Jernstedt, Halden and Muzito combined to win the 200 free relay.
Anna Auld started the Gators out with a win in the 1,650 free. Bella Sims won the 200 free in 1:46.00, leading a podium sweep with Emma Weyant and Lainy Kruger. Sims won the 100 free, and Kruger claimed the 500 with JoJo Ramey second. Catie Choate (200 back) and Sofia Plaza (400 IM) added wins.
Florida lost points with its B medley relay and A free relay both DQed for early takeoffs.
Florida’s Camyla Monroy swept diving, scoring 354.53 points on 3-meter and 324.68 on 1-meter. FSU’s Samantha Vear was second in both.
