Paris Olympics, Day 2 Finals Heat Sheet: Adam Peaty Goes For Three-Peat Among Three Finals
The second evening of finals at the Paris Olympics will include finals in the men’s 400 IM, women’s 100 butterfly and men’s 100 breaststroke as well as semifinals in the men’s and women’s 200 freestyle, women’s 100 breast and men’s 100 backstroke. The session begins at 8:30 p.m. CEST (2:30 p.m. ET in the United States) at La Défense Arena.

Leon Marchand will open the session in the men’s 400 IM final as the heavy favorite, and the crowd at La Défense Arena will be roaring in hopes of Marchand delivering France’s first gold medal in swimming at these Paris Olympics and first at any Games since Florent Manaudou won the 50 free 12 years ago in London. Marchand should not be challenged in this field, while Max Litchfield, Daiya Seto and Carson Foster are the other leading contenders for the podium.
Immediately afterward, the women’s 100 fly final will see two Americans as the top seeds, with Gretchen Walsh and Torri Huske hoping to maintain those spots from semifinals, although China’s Zhang Yufei and Germany’s Angelina Kohler will be on either side while defending champion Maggie Mac Neil is lurking.
Later on, the men’s 100 breast will see Adam Peaty chasing a third consecutive gold medal in the event, and he is up against China’s Qin Haiyang, with Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi, the United States’ Nic Fink and Dutch swimmers Arno Kamminga and Caspar Corbeau trying to play spoiler.
Semifinal action will have Danas Rapsys and David Popovici in lane four of their respective heats of the men’s 200 free, Tang Qianting and Tatjana Smith in lane four in the women’s 100 breast, Pieter Coetze and Hubert Kos entering atop the men’s 100 back and Mary-Sophie Harvey and Mollie O’Callaghan seeded first in each heat of the women’s 200 free. Defending champion Ariarne Titmus swims next to O’Callaghan, her Autralian teammate.
